Day 21 El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla de las Mulas

Tuesday 28th May 2013

19 km - 4.5 hrs

A relatively easy day with a pleasant walk to Mansilla de las Mulas. I was walking with Katie and Lena as we approached Mansilla, and we decided to push into the centre of the town rather than stay at the albergue "El Jardin del Camino" on the edge of the town. Mansilla is quite an old and historic town, and we entered through what remains of the old town walls and the town gate. The town was bustling with a central street market, but we headed for the municipal albergue, "Amigos Del Perigrinos Mansilla". We had a while to wait for the albergue to open, but they were kind enough to allow us to put our bags inside so we went off to look at the market.

Leaving El Burgo Ranero

The local market

It looks like the man's job to buy the greens...... much discussion, prodding, sniffing going
on as though life itself depended on selecting the best possible bunch.

Wonderfully fresh vegetables.... but why don't they appear on the dinner table with our peregrino meal?

Much discussion re the price of things today!

Fresh peppers

If you want to know what's going on in Mansilla ..... get down the market!

Wonderful preserved meat and cheeses

A couple of locals buying fruit... no, wait.... it's Lena and Katie!

Mick pretending to buy vegetables ..... why did I have to pick up the most phallic looking vegetable in the market!

More heavy weight discussions going on!

The old town walls

The north-east gate....the way pilgrims from the "Roman Way" or "Trajan Way" entered Mansilla

Typical town house style
